To all CofC students looking to rent in downtown Charleston:DO NOT RENT FROM BLUESTEIN LAW FIRM. I wrote a detailed version of my whole personal experience renting from them, but it turned out to be around 5 pages long, which I figured nobody would read. With that being said, this is a very brief version of just some of the things we (my two roommates and I) dealt with when renting from Bluestein. Bluestein does not take care of their properties and this became very apparent to us very shortly after moving in. The only contact information we were given was our landlord’s work email and office phone number. She was not in the office very often and the office is closed on the weekends so as you can imagine, communicating with her was kind of a nightmare. This is difficult for many reasons as getting in touch with her for anything was incredibly difficult, but there was one incident in particular that demonstrated how unhelpful this is. Our front window was smashed in by some random person on the street in the middle of the night on a weekend. We had no way to let her know or get help until Monday due to the only contact information she allowed us to have. Another issue was the state of the house when we moved in. The unit was not clean, there were many lightbulbs that were out, holes in walls, broken outlets, exposed wires from the ceiling of my bedroom where a smoke detector was supposed to be, etc. Some of these things ended up being removed from our security deposit despite them being the product of the previous tenants, not us. Another huge issue post-move-in was the state the previous tenants left the trash. They left all trash and recycling bins overflowing with garbage as well as numerous bags of trash on the ground around the bins illegally placed against the other side of the house. We moved in with zero access to trash cans. Simultaneously, the size of the pile of garbage was so large that we were not going to be responsible for moving it. After all, it was not our trash. We mentioned this problem immediately to the landlord and to make it short, she basically said it’s not her responsibility but that we need to take care of it. It took Charleston Livability showing up at our house for our landlord to finally have someone come out and get rid of it.Because of the disgusting state the previous tenants had left the house with, they attracted rats; a fact we did not know prior to signing. After the trash incident, we were left with an infestation. Our story with the rats is one that is way too long for me to explain in detail here, but know that the term “infestation” is not an exaggeration. At one point, we found a family of dead rats living in our stove/oven unit and had to remove it from the house because of the smell and the health hazard it would be to cook with. We were without a stove/oven for a full month because my landlord needed to make sure it didn't just “need repairs.” We were still forced to pay the full rent for this month. There are many other huge problems with this rental, but the big issue with Bluestein’s property management is their blatant disrespect for college students. I cannot count the number of times my roommates or I have emailed her NUMEROUS times about a certain issue or concern and she would not respond or simply not acknowledge the issue. If one of our parents sent an email, however, she would respond immediately. I really hope this painted a very clear picture of exactly what you do not deserve to be dealing with as a renter. Please, if you ever come across a Bluestein Law Firm property, steer clear. It will save you so much trouble. I have heard very similar stories from others that I know who also rented from them. Do yourself a favor, and keep searching. There are good landlords in Charleston, and Bluestein is not one of them. Enjoy your time in school in a house that’s actually pleasant to live in!
